On behalf of the organizing committee, it is our pleasure to formally invite you to the International Conference ’Towards Sustainable Urban Proximities’, to be held on Thursday 4th September 2025 at the Académie du Climat and Paris City Hall, and Friday 5th September 2025 at Sorbonne University, in Paris, France.

The Conference is co-organised by the City of Paris, UN-Habitat, UCLG and Chaire ETI (IAE Paris Sorbonne University), within the broader framework of the Global Observatory of Sustainable Proximities. The conference will be held at the iconic venues of the Académie du Climat, Paris City Hall and Sorbonne University.

Urban Proximity – broadening the concept of the 15-minute city as the physical and functional closeness of urban services, infrastructures, and communities – has emerged as a powerful response to the pressing challenges of modern cities. In the face of climate change, economic inequalities, and social fragmentation, proximity offers a blueprint for creating compact, connected, and inclusive urban spaces. By fostering walkability, enhancing public transportation, and encouraging mixed-use development, cities can become more resilient, environmentally sustainable, and socially equitable.

The conference will present the current state of research on sustainable proximities and best practices around the world, as well as discuss the new frontiers and the potentials offered by urban proximities to increase sustainability. The international conference will serve as a pivotal platform for fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and catalyzing action on the new frontiers of urban proximities. It will particularly leverage a new joint agenda for sustainable urban proximities, with concrete outcomes and takeaways such as actionable key messages.
